Screen Door Replacement Off Poinciana Dr — Naples, FL
A torn, warped screen door had turned this homeowner's lanai into a mosquito zone. We replaced the full screen panel and rollers — bug-free airflow restored in under an hour.
The Problem
A homeowner off Poinciana Drive — just west of Airport-Pulling Road and a few minutes from The Fairways at Naples — called us about a sliding screen door that had been out of commission for most of the winter. The screen mesh was shredded in multiple spots from their dog pushing through it to get in and out of the lanai, and the aluminum frame had developed a visible bow along the bottom rail. It wouldn't sit in the track properly anymore, leaving a two-inch gap at the base that let mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and lizards right into the house.
They'd tried patching the tears with adhesive screen repair tape twice already. The patches held for a few days each time before peeling off in the humidity. By the time they called us, the screen was more tape than mesh — and with Florida's mosquito season ramping up, they needed it fixed for real.
What We Found
Our technician pulled the screen panel off the track and laid it out for a full inspection. The mesh was beyond patching — between the dog damage, UV degradation, and the patch adhesive pulling at the fibers, the entire screen was compromised. Even the sections that looked intact were brittle and would tear with light finger pressure. That's normal for standard fiberglass mesh in South Florida after 5-7 years of direct sun exposure.
The frame had two issues. The bottom rail was bowed inward from the dog pushing against it repeatedly, and both roller housings were cracked — the small plastic wheels that let the screen glide along the track. The cracked rollers explained why the screen had stopped sliding smoothly long before the mesh tore, and the homeowner had been forcing it back and forth in the track, which accelerated the frame warping.
The Fix
For this one, a full screen door replacement made more sense than trying to re-screen and straighten the old frame. When the frame is bowed and both rollers are cracked, you're spending almost as much on parts and labor to fix the old one as you would on a new panel that'll last another decade.
We installed a new aluminum-frame screen door, custom-fitted to the existing track dimensions. The new panel uses pet-resistant screen mesh — a heavier-gauge vinyl-coated polyester that's significantly tougher than standard fiberglass. It won't tear from a dog leaning on it or pushing through, and it holds up much better against UV breakdown in Florida's direct sun. We fitted new stainless steel rollers, set the height adjustment so the door glides smoothly with one finger, and confirmed the latch catches cleanly against the jamb.
If you have dogs or cats that lean against or push on your screen door, always request pet-resistant mesh when getting a replacement. It costs a little more upfront but lasts 3-4 times longer than standard fiberglass mesh. It also resists UV breakdown better, which matters when your lanai faces west and gets afternoon sun year-round.
Why Screen Doors Fail Fast in Naples
Naples homeowners use their lanais more than almost anyone in the country — the weather allows it 10 to 11 months a year. That means screen doors in this area get opened and closed dozens of times a day in many homes. Add in pets, grandkids, salt air from the Gulf, intense UV exposure, and the occasional tropical storm, and you've got a recipe for screen doors that wear out well before the glass slider behind them does.
The neighborhoods around Poinciana Drive, Ponce De Leon, Airport-Pulling Road, and the communities near Grey Oaks and The Fairways are full of homes with 10-15 year old screen doors running on original rollers and standard fiberglass mesh. If your screen has tears, doesn't slide smoothly, or gaps at the bottom when closed, it's not keeping bugs out — and in Naples, mosquito season runs from roughly April through November.

Don't ignore a screen door that gaps at the bottom or has small tears. In Collier County, standing water from summer rains creates prime mosquito breeding conditions from May through October. Even a one-inch gap at the base of your screen door is enough for mosquitoes and no-see-ums to get into your home in large numbers.
New screen door installed with pet-resistant mesh and stainless steel rollers. Glides smoothly, latches cleanly, zero gaps. Lanai is sealed and bug-free heading into summer.
